Gazprom to move to Saint-Petersburg

From Moscow to Saint-Petersburg

Gazprom, the largest extractor of natural gas and one of the largest companies in the world, could be fully relocated to St. Petersburg by 2015.

The company is currently based in Moscow. Many subsidiaries of state owned Gazprom are already moved to Saint Petersburg and more are searching to rent property until the giant Lakhta Center headquarters is completed in 2018. That move will be good for the City of Saint Petersburg because one of Russia’s most lucrative tax generators will now be paying into the Leningrad, and not Moscow region.

In 2012, the company paid nearly $5 billion (160 billion rubles) in taxes to Moscow.

The 400 meter high Lahkta skyscraper was supposed to be build in the center of Saint Petersburg, but hard work from activists cancelled those plans. New plans were made for the company to build the headquarters along the Gulf of Finland. But when work started remains of an ancient Swedish fortress were discovered, which delayed the construction.

Gazprom employs over 400.000 in total. But the move to Saint Petersburg will affect only the Moscow personnel.
