Earth Hour

March 31st, 2012, at Palace Square, the people of St. Petersburg will celebrate Earth Hour. Dozens of people will gather at exactly 20:30 and light candles as a sign for the importance of the future of St. Petersburg and the Earth.

Every year on the last Saturday in March, millions of people around the world turn off their lights for an hour. It is a symbolic gesture to show the importance of energy consumption and that we should give the Earth a break from electricity. Earth Hour is a symbol of respect for nature, and a concern for the limited resources of our planet.

"The Sky of Desires" is the most popular Lantern launch in Russia. Everyone gets together to illuminate the night sky with bright colors of St Petersburg. This is a very beautiful and romantic spectacle, and all hand-made.

Additional information: A thin drawing paper is used, which is completely dissolved from the heat, the torch entirely burns through and falls to the ground. Only a bamboo hoop is left, which decomposes like any branch fallen from a tree.

The torch flies high into the sky, and as it gains altitude, it reaches heights where oxygen levels are lower, allowing it to go out gradually and naturally.
