When you decide to visit St. Petersburg, or you are already in St. Petersburg and want to take a trip back to the USSR, we know just the place to send you to. This place is a donut place on Bolshaya Konyushnnaya Street. Here, you can get a little view of what service, food and people were like in the Soviet Union. Spend time looking for it is not necessary: at the entrance to café sits a Granny promoter and invites visitors to the sound of "Donuts, donuts, hot donuts! There is no way you can miss it, as there is always a long line, especially on the weekends (but do not worry, they move very quickly). Inside is a touching Soviet retro interior, not a modern pastiche, but from fifty years ago, when everything was exactly the same. There are tables, and two rooms with one cashier at each and very concise menus (only donuts with powdered sugar, tea, coffee, milk and lemonade). The donuts taste has also not changed in fifty years. It is carefully observed by using Soviet technology and they even cook donuts on the machine of the time, so they can be obtained as tasty as before, golden, with delicate crust. Also one of the best parts is that the cheap Soviet prices remain the same. WOW! By the way, if you think that the main "inhabitants" of this café are only students and seniors, you are deeply mistaken. This donut shop has long been a cult place to native Leningrad residents, and quite often you will meet customers from other countries not speaking Russian but with the fingers explaining to the cashiers how many donuts they want . ;) Not so long ago, the city officials wanted to close the cafe giving place for a new architectural object. After hearing this, the café wanted to close for good and it was a wild scandal involving the whole city! This because it's a rare and unique place to find anywhere in Russia and it still has the great old nostalgia and warmth of the Soviet Union café atmosphere. So now this café is part of the so-called "Red Book of St. Petersburg" and cannot be closed. St. Petersburg businessmen also quickly realized that nostalgia can earn money, so new cafes like this are starting to pop up around the city (one can be found near Gostiny Dvor where one can buy donuts for 12 rubles each). But if you want to not just eat a couple of donuts, but also to enjoy a unique "Leningrad" aura, you must try this place on Bolshaya Konyushennaya Street! Related: |
